Have you ever had dreams about houses?

I have.

But I wasn’t sure whether I dreamt of them,

or they dreamt of me.

I was dead asleep in the dream.

But I started feeling the window shake from afar

with my eyes close.

 (It’s an Earthquake!)

I thought it was an earthquake at first.

I bounced up and stormed out of the room,

calling for Mom and Dad.

No answer whatsoever.

Then, I started to hear the sound of water flowing,

Then, I started to hear the sound of water flowing,

reminding me of the waves on the beach.

Water then started to make its way into the house through walls and floors.

The whole house was quaking.

Quaking and seeping.

No idea whether I should run for the rooftop,

or for the ground.

Stuck my head out from the first floor and looked down.

The ground floor was terribly flooded.

Then, the air became humid and hot.

The water slowly evaporated.

And then steamed up.

Then turned into a fog.

A thick, opaque fog wall that is almost impossible to see through.

The fog then congregated above.

Through the ceiling.

Through the stairs.

They continued to gather up

as if they were alive

at the ceiling,

until finally condensed into a chunk of a white lump.

The lump kept flowing,

and kept transforming.

The angles, masses and surfaces were then created.

Along with the squares, rounds, holes, and bumps.

Slowly,

a set of new, upside-down furniture emerged from the ceiling.

With new walls

and new windows.

And also a new me standing by the window

that stared right into my eyes.

Everyone’s gathered back up at Grandma’s funeral.

First auntie’s family.

Second auntie’s.

Third auntie’s.

The uncle’s.

我們家

Mine.

And those I’ve forgotten,

or were impossible to be identified.

We sat down

at where we were assigned to,

and closed our eyes.

法師說

The mage said

“Please repeat the incantations after me in silence.”

“Please read with me.”

“The more we read them,

the smoother Grandma arrives the Sukhāvatī(1).”

We repeated after the mage

even barely had an idea of what those incantations meant.

So we just read them straight out

with a mimicked sound.

(Babbling)

(Babbling)

I read with my eyes closed.

Even a whisper would sound like a clap of thunder

in the darkness where only glimmers flowed.

The voices in the room sounded like a roar emanating from within.

The high-pitch roars.

The low-pitch roars.

The loud roars.

The quiet roars.

The roars gathered up.

We gathered up.

We cuddled up.

然後

And then

another layer of voice slid into the roar.

It’s from Grandpa.

We opened our eyes in secret.

He was reciting

with eyes still shut.

His recitation sounded similar to ours

but was far off for tempos

and notes.

Everyone giggled in secret,

The roar loosened when everyone giggled.

Grandpa was still humming his verse.

Tightened.

L o o s e n e d.

Tightened.

L  o   o   s   e   n   e   d.

Then I felt a sense of distance

at the very moment when the roar loosened.

Seeing the room and the people

with a third-person perception.

I don’t remember anything read on that day

but the moment when the roar all loosened due to Grandpa’s funky recitation.

That very moment.

What does the house used to look like?

It was a pencil manufactory

with chickens and pigs in it.

And a ski field as well.

And a swimming pool.

A swimming pool?

Correct. A swimming pool for commercial use.

What did it look like?

I asked Dad. He then picked up a pen and started to make a drawing for it.

First, a frame has been drawn.

A frame that represents the home.

Then

直線

a vertical line

橫線

followed by a horizontal line.

The lines kept going further out

expanding the boundaries of the home that I was told.

To map it out on the current house setting

The swimming pool would cover the areas that include

the dining room

客廳

the living room

廚房

the kitchen

the clay studio

the kilning area

木作區

the woodwork area

then goes all the way further out

beyond the galvanised steel wall.

The long and narrow square shape

almost perfectly covers the house symbol.

According to Dad, the pool is just right under the house.

There may still be things left underground.

What did the pool look like?

I asked First Aunt. She pondered briefly and said the memories were vague, as she was only a high school student.

But she remembered the late evening when she was reading by the pool.

She was the only one around, as it was too chilly to read in an evening of fall.

So she walked along the pool while reciting the ancient verses from school.

The pool was roofless.

Nothing was in the way between the sky and the pool.

So the water was magnificently dyed with golden yellow and fiery red.

The passing birds could be found on the water surface as well.

She kept working on the recitation homework

while seeing the deepening shade of black slowly creep into the pool.

What did the pool look like?

I asked Second Aunt. She seemed excited and worried at the same time about the question.

她說

She said

Your Dad and I were the lifeguards for the pool back then,

so we spent quite a lot of time down there.

Sometimes we came across expensive lost watches in the pool.

We can keep them if no one comes to claim them back.

There were occasions

when the nightclub hostesses

and the gangsters

came in

and sent us on errands.

On busy days like summer,

accidents with kids being drowned happened from time to time.

Because the naughty youngsters had no idea how deep the water was,

and they hadn’t learned how to swim.

Second Aunt shrugged and said

I heard a voice calling for help

when I was in my room on the day.

救命

Help.

救我

Help me.

I thought it was just paracusis or something else

until I got goosebumps all over my body.

The voice was getting louder.

So I rushed to the pool,

finding a kid who managed to sneak in from outside drowning.

Thank god he was in a bright orange shirt,

so I jumped right into the pool.

He’s okay.

I’m glad he’s okay.

What did the pool look like?

I asked Third Aunt.

She said she was too young to swim back then.

So she often got sent to peddle custard red bean bun at the poolside.

As she recalled, her friends were always excited

about going to ‘her pool’ after school.

She then corrected that it was not ‘her pool’ but ‘her home’.

But her friends always didn’t get it.

Furthermore,

they’d drain the water out when the pool was quiet. And you could find an abundance of mosses on the pool floor.

Therefore if the rain ponded in the empty pool, they would get mossy

during the winter rainy season.

Don’t forget those fishes that sneaked into the pool through the pipes.

New tribes were emerging in the pool.

What did the pool look like?

I asked the uncle.

He said he was too young, so nothing really registered in his mind.

What did the pool look like?

I asked Grandpa.

He remembered there were greens, maybe some whites as well.

Nope. there were blues.

Grandpa answered slowly in Taiwanese

with an Hai-Khau accent.

Your Grandma and I would go clean the pool.

Scrubbing the moss off.

Spending the whole night just to clean a bare bit.

然後

Then

Then there was a night.

We were cleaning with reluctance, as usual.

And we found out there was a glowy reflection

at the spot that we just scrubbed.

We looked up,

realising it was a full moon night.

We then sat in the half-cleaned pool

for five minutes for the moon.

Have you ever had dreams about houses?

I have.

But I’m not sure whether I dreamt of them,

or they dreamt of me.

On the roof where all the steams gathered,

my eyesight started to rotate,

and then the whole body followed, ending up upside down,

just like how those pieces of furniture made out of fog stood.

Looking at the steams on the ground floor from above.

The steams had then clotted into a pond.

There were lotuses in the pond.

I saw the flowers in white, violet, pink, and yellow,

and the leaves in azure, green, black, and copper.

The pond was packed with colours.

Each colour made room for itself through the water,

intertwined without blending.

A woman in red

made her presence in my sight.

As she walked into the colours,

the water was then

dyed red.

A red that was textured of both transparent and creamy.

The woman slowly submerged in the water, step by step.

The water and the lotuses

followed the submergence like a tide

at her pace.

Soon, the water and the woman

disappeared into the floor

together.

Whoosh…

Whoosh…

The water made its way down to the deep.

The fog furniture solidified into rain drips,

and became a heavy downpour on every inch of the house.
